Variation Ideas
There are so many ways to serve this crockpot whole chicken! Sometimes, I add potatoes, carrots, and celery at the bottom of the crockpot to cook with the chicken. The juices from the chicken make the veggies extra flavorful.
I also love experimenting with different seasonings. If you’re a garlic lover, try making a 40-clove garlic chicken in your crockpot. Simply stuff your chicken with 3 heads (or around 40 cloves) of garlic, rub the skin with butter, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. You can also add fresh herbs like thyme and rosemary for extra flavor. For a fresh twist, squeeze lemon and use onion powder for an amazing taste!
How to Cook a Whole Chicken in a Crockpot
Step 1 – Slice the onions into large pieces and place them at the bottom of the crockpot. This keeps the chicken above the juices and gives you that rotisserie-style flavor.
Step 2 – Place the chicken breast side up, on top of the onions in the crockpot. Use a basting brush to rub the olive oil all over the chicken.
Step 3 – Mix together all the seasonings. Sprinkle this mixture over the chicken and use the basting brush to evenly coat the chicken with the seasoning.
Step 4 – Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours, or on high for 2-3 hours. Make sure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Once done, remove the chicken from the crockpot and serve.
Step 5 – If you want crispy skin like a roasted chicken, place the chicken on a baking dish or cookie sheet and broil for 4-5 minutes. Just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn!
Recipe Tips
- Season the chicken evenly: For the best flavor, be sure to coat the entire chicken with the seasoning.
- Cooking time varies: The cooking time will depend on the size of your chicken. Always use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken is fully cooked before serving.
