How can a Student Transfer from a Nigerian University to a Canadian University?

1. Meet the requirements

To be able to transfer from a Nigerian university to a Canadian university, you would need to have a:

• Valid international passport.
• Language proficiency certificate (English or French).
• A bank statement is proof of your capacity to fund your studies.
• CGPA of a minimum of 2.3 to 2.8.

2. Decide on a program and the university

You would need to choose your course and where you want to study. Make sure the institution is on the Designated Learning List (DLI) so you can get a student visa and be sure you want to study that program at that university.

3. Take the language proficiency test

This is to prove that you can communicate in Canadian languages, which are English and French. Examples of language proficiency tests include IELTS, TOEFL etc for English. IELTS is most preferable as all Canadian universities accept it. If you are planning to study in a French-speaking province then you can take the TEF, TCF, DELF or DALF. It is advisable to book early so you can get a suitable date and time earlier.

4. Apply to your university of choice.

5. Apply for your study permit

You should now proceed with your visa application which can be done online or at a Visa collection centre where you would be required to pay about CAD 150 for your visa fee. However, the following would be required of you:

• Letter of acceptance from the Canadian university.
• Recent passport photograph.
• Evidence that you can support yourself financially which may include bank statements from your bank or that of your sponsor.
• Biometrics may cost about CAD 83.
• An interview (optional).

Note, that if you are accepted into a university in Quebec, you would require a “Certificat d’acceptation du Québec” (CAQ) which would be sent to you by your university.
